Pounamu (greenstone/jade) carvings are highly valued and treasured within New Zealand and Māori culture. Pounamu is considered a taonga (treasure/precious) and is therefore protected under the treaty of Waitangi and means limited authentic New Zealand pounamu is available to be carved. Jade comes in a variety of colours ranging from a very pale almost transparent green to black jade, and when jade is held to the sun it shows even more of its stunning natural beauty. Jade is found in many places in the world and often Canadian or Australian jade will be carved as there is so little New Zealand pounamu available.
