Maori warriors were fierce fighters in close combat and the Patu made the most practical as a striking weapon. Patu were made from hardwood, whale bone, or stone. The most prestigious material for the patu was pounnamu(greenstone). Patu made from pounamu were generally called "mere". Maori decorated the patu by carving into the wood, bone or stone. Not recommended to wear stained pendants in water as constant exposure over a long period of time could affect the staining.
